Does filing nails in only one direction really help the nail? ~Amanda<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">ANSWER<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This tip has been floating around for\u00a0several years, including on this website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m so happy that my mentor, Doug Schoon, has recently done his scientific tests and finally addressed this topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve tested the results by using <strong>high magnified photography<\/strong> to record the results using various filing techniques. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After examining nail plates using various abrasive grits and nail filing techniques, I did not observe any differences in the condition of the nail plate, when comparing filing in only one direction with filing in a back and forth (see-saw) fashion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This study was conducted on normal, healthy nail plates. So perhaps there would be a difference if the nail plates are damaged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But it appears to be a myth. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve seen nothing to support the claim that filing in one direction provides any benefits for the natural nail plate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">~ Doug Schoon, author of <em>Nail Structure and Product Chemistry<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Personally, I\u2019ve used the see-saw method almost all of my life. It\u2019s faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I stopped about 4 years ago. Since I couldn&#8217;t find any information about filing the edges of natural nails in his book, I felt it was probably a good idea to file one direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I love it when science proves us wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m also thrilled that it\u2019s a perfectly acceptable method and <strong>does not\u00a0damage<\/strong> the nail plate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you find that the see-saw method hurts your fingers because of the torque, then I recommend that you slow down and use single strokes. Three to the left, 3 to the right, and so on.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Size Matters<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The grit of your nail file does matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Grits below 180 should not be used on natural nails since they can cause too much damage. It won&#8217;t matter what filing motion is used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I personally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myblisskiss.com\/bliss-kiss-crystal-nail-file\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prefer a crystal nail file<\/a> because of the smooth edge finish it provides.
