Stress Fractures In Nails<\/h2>\n

Have you ever been making the bed and bent a nail?<\/p>\n

I have. Way too many times.<\/p>\n

Simply put, a stress fracture in nails is when you accidentally bend the nail but it doesn’t break.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead, you’re left with a bunch of keratin nail cells that won’t lie back together.<\/p>\n

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a fissure<\/strong> is “a long, narrow opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting, especially in rock or earth.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this fissure in your nail, it’s impossible to reverse the damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So how do you cope?<\/p>\n

How To Prevent\u00a0Stress Fractures<\/h2>\n

The first thing to do is slow down<\/strong>. When you are more conscious of where your hands are going, you can prevent bends and breaks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How Do I Fix It?<\/h2>\n

\"stressIf there are any keratin cells sticking up, I oil my nails<\/strong> with a jojoba wax ester hydrating nail oil<\/a>. This will help bond some of the stress fractured layers back together.<\/p>\n

After oil, if there are any\u00a0“fuzzy bits<\/strong>” I use\u00a0a\u00a0crystal nail file<\/a> using light strokes<\/strong> going the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

Please be very careful<\/strong> to not file down much of your nail plate. You want to remove only those cells that are sticking up and destined to catch your hair.<\/p>\n

To strengthen<\/strong> the stress fracture,\u00a0I rely on my favorite nail glue available at Sally Beauty Supply\u2014IBD Brush-On Gel Resin\u2122. It’s also available on Amazon, but costs twice as much.<\/p>\n

This glue\u00a0is nothing<\/strong> like like cured nail gel polish.\u00a0The formula is basically the same as Super Glue\u2122 but thicker<\/strong>. It makes it really easy to apply. For more information, see my How To Fix A Broken Nail<\/a>\u00a0article.<\/p>\n

In Conclusion\"stress<\/b><\/p>\n

When\u00a0you’ve done your repair, it’s really important<\/strong> to use nail polish to seal in that stress fracture, so it doesn’t get worse. I explain my process in my Fab 5 Polish Wrap<\/a> article.<\/p>\n

After that, it’s just waiting for it to grow out so you can file off the damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n
